Between 5th and 9th of February, the Volo team will be at Spring Fair – the UK’s leading trade show for gift and home retailers, at the Birmingham NEC.

Along the years we’ve enabled many of our customers to grow their businesses in this sector and at this year’s show our Product Manager, Ben Orme, will be speaking about the benefits of selling gifts and home items on marketplaces like Amazon and eBay.

More and more people are using marketplaces to do their shopping. When looking at the benefits, it’s easy to understand why.

You can browse options and price ranges from the comfort of your home. There’s no need to go shopping according to the opening hours of brick and mortar shops. Impartial reviews give you information on the benefits or weaknesses of products.

Online retailers have quickly spotted the opportunity and an increasing number of merchants have expanded their businesses to more than one marketplace.

Even if the marketplace charges fees or limits the range of products that can be sold, the benefits of trading on these platforms are a lot higher.
For example, marketplaces require reduced marketing costs compared with other online sales channels. They offer greater transparency on availability, prices and stock levels. At the same time, there are no closing hours and no borders, which provides great flexibility and freedom to retailers. International expansion is particularly attractive for online retailers as they don’t need to make large investments and the risks are a lot lower than setting up local operations.

Of course, managing several channels on each marketplace – from listings to stock, to delivery and returns – can be a significant challenge.
